Walkie talkies can be incredibly handy in a number of different situations. Whether you’re trying to pull a prank on your friends or trying to get in touch with the outside world while trekking through a forest, a walkie talkie is an immensely useful device to have.
Walkie talkies are particularly great during emergencies. Picture this: you’re out in a very remote location and your car just broke down on the side of a road. There aren’t any other vehicles in sight and you can’t seem to get a cell phone signal. If you have a walkie talkie, then you don’t have to wait for help to miraculously appear. Instead, with a long-range walkie talkie, you could simply tune into an emergency help channel, send out an SOS distress signal or reach a friend or family member.
These days, there are plenty of walkie talkies that are built to withstand tough outdoor conditions. For instance, the Motorola MS350R is sure to delight any outdoorsman or survivalist with its extremely sturdy exterior. It is also completely waterproof and sturdy so you don’t have to worry about not being able to use your walkie talkie in the rain or dropping it onto a hard surface.
An issue that concerns a lot of hikers, backpackers, and campers is the battery life of a walkie talkie. Most walkie talkies give you eight to ten hours of use, but if you’re on a trip lasting several days or you have to deal with some sort of emergency, then that may not be enough. In situations like this, it would be quite nice to have a solar-powered walkie talkie because then you’d have more versatility in terms of charging options.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any solar-powered walkie talkies available to buy right now (other than cheap Chinese-manufactured options that frankly don’t seem at all reliable), although some may potentially be in development. However, there are some great solar-powered portable chargers that you can hook up your walkie talkie to whenever you need an additional charge.
Many reliable brands like NeckTeck, RAV Power and Wildteck have great offerings but our personal favourite is the SunJack 25W Solar Charger. Here’s what we love about it:
The Sunjack Solar Charger was clearly built for those who enjoy being outdoors. It’s got a layer of ETFE (a fluorine-based plastic) instead of PET (which most chargers use) which protects it from both temperature and chemical damage. In addition, it provides plenty of flexibility and sturdiness.
It Gives You More Power
ETFE allows 15% more UV permeability than PET, meaning that you’ll get more power than most other solar chargers out there. The Sunjack also contains a smart IC chip which optimizes charging to suit the device that has been plugged into it. This way, your walkie talkie will not be overcharged.
It’s Very Compact And Lightweight
When folded, the Sunjack Solar Charger will fit into the glove compartment of your car or even a small bag. Its exact dimensions are 6.75” x 9.25” x 1.75” when folded, making it about the same size as a regular iPad. In addition, it weighs only around 2 pounds even with the battery backup that it comes with. This is important if you have lots of other items you need to lug around while traversing the outdoors.
The problem with most solar-powered chargers is that they take a longer time to charge your devices. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Sunjack Solar Charger as many reviewers will tell you.
While solar walkie talkies aren’t available yet, solar-powered chargers definitely are. While there are many options for you to choose from, we recommend the Sunjack Solar Charger. It has a sturdy build, great UV permeability, is compact and lightweight and can charge your walkie talkie much faster than most other portable solar chargers.
